Anthropology 101 - Class Reaction

On the mornings of 17 January and 7 February 2008 two classes of first year applied math students at ENSIMAG in France viewed the short film Anthropology 101. They were told nothing about the film before watching it, and they were asked not to discuss it with their classmates after viewing it. They were simply asked to proceed to the school language lab and post a comment on this blog. This is what they thought...

To find out more about this film go to Come Clean.

this film is very interesting because it gives a global view of human achievments and behaviors. The future that is given to the Earth in this film is a fear that many people have nowadays , considering that the number of nuclear weapons is still growing , even after all the laws that have been made. The contrast between the the abilities of doing good and evil of men is well shown in this film, illustrated by beautiful landscape and creations, but also by awful pictures, even disgusting ones. One thing I may criticize in this film is that it goes several times on the same points, giving the impression that the film is showing the same thing two or three time but with differents examples. Anyway I think this is a good film that make the watcher think about the responsabilities of human kind in the health of our planet, and it is done in an unusual way that may pick up the interest of the public. It reminds us how weak nature is against the power of human factories and scientist and shows a dramatic but realisitc possible close future of our planet.

I have found this film quite stricking. Some images are hardly bearable. This was surely what the realisator wanted : he wanted to shock us in order to make us react. It's well done , I was shocked and now am I asking myself a lot of questions. What are the human doing. Why are we collecting so much weapons ? Why nobody react ?

A rather pessimistic view of the human world, but I think it is well done. The movie wants to show what are the man's possibilities, in good and bad terms. Perhaps the bad part, the "dark side", is too important, I don't feel very good during certain parts, specially the Hiroshima's part.

The ET's point of view is not a bad idea, amd the realization is good, not so many special effects, just pictures and little part of movies, wich are enough for show the reality. I just hope the end of the world will not be in 2025 :).

Now, I feel depressive for the rest of the day ^^. Too many bad pictures ...

At first this film make me feel a little inconfortable as some pictures were very hard. Indeed it shows many problems of our society : war, global warming, weapon business, medias.

However I like that this film shows also the good things about human beings like love and compation. Then there are some pictures of our planet which are very beautiful to make people conscious that it's important to care about it.

To my mind it's a great film to make people aware of all the problems in our society. It could make them to realize that we need to do some changes in our way of life in order to save humanity. To conclude I liked this film as it was very interesting and I wish there are more like this.

Hi,
I think that this movie is great and very efficient.

I felt strange after sawing it: it made me feel sad for all of the mistakes the human kind did.
It's very painful to see that we can do at the same time such great and bad things

Thinking that the Earth could come to its end in less than twenty years because of WMDs is pretty horrifying...

All human beings should be united instead of being so selfish and self-centered... We all know that. But the fact is that everybody thinks that we can't change anything alone...

Besides, the chosen pictures are great and scary. Taking the point of view of an alien anthropology expedition is efficient.
Thx for this movie: it's not a happy one, but it can change the mind of many people.

I have just watched Anthropology 101 and my first impression is that it is a short interesting film.
First it is an efficient warning about the bad impact people have on the Earth. Indeed, the film takes place in the future and the storyteller is from another planet. As the Earth has already been destroyed, we can't prevent us from thinking about the future of our planet. Moreover the film really exposes the main facts that lead the Earth in that situation and shocking pictures are used so as to make the most people feel concerned. Finally, the film reveals why the Earth will be destroyed: because of the important changings in the weather and a nuclear war which has been irreversible "thanks" to the unstoppable mass production of nuclear weapons in developed countries.
I think that Anthropology 101 is an original that would sensibilize many people but in my view it is not enough to make most people on our planet react together in spite of all the cultural differences.

About the film
The film adopt an interesting point of view , even if the point of view of aliens more technologically and spiritually advanced is quite classical on many comics (Steven Spielberg transformers : it rings a bell) . But what is really interesting is the end , the detachement it reminds to everybody that the hearth and Humankind is just a dust in the whole universe .

When you're trying to make a film about humankind , don't use 3 times the photographs of the same guy . try to make friends !!!

About the message

it's very easy to criticize the system and the past , yes you can say it's only figures and facts ,but the way to present it , is your politic orientation , and i find this is too easy , everybody knows that the situation is hard , if you re trying to make people feel bad about poor conutries , starvation all thes kind of things , you don't really need a film , just say them to watch tv news .

I think it's a kind of thing like that .
"Hi guys look at this it's very cool, i ve made a film about all the defects of humankind , I am so cool !!!! I feel so concerned !!"

"Solutions ? "

"Hey guy , it's just art !!! "

To conclude this film don't deliver any message because we already know all these things . It' s just another way to express themselves for the class of population of richest countries whiwh is called in france les "bobos"

This film, although short, is sorrowful enough. Nearly only the atrocities of humanity are shown. The message is well transmitted, so I think it's an effective film but such a pessimistic view of what mankind had done.
Moreover the images are significant what supports well the statements of the narrator and creates the atmosphere of embarrasement of this film.

I really appreciated this fictive objective point of view about the atrocities humans did and are going to do back if nothing happen.

I personally divide humans into 3 groups : the ones who have power, the ones who follow their orders and the ones who are enough intelligent to see that our current system can only lead us to conflicts. I noticed through this document that I'm not alone to sense it.

An advanced technology, but a primitive mind. I liked this idea. A major problem with technology is that those who creates it aren't those who use it. An other is that its creator isn't always innocent. It leads us to the question : should we stop improving technology until the situation get better ?

Thanks a much for this movie.

The director of this movie critizices the behavior of humans being and their "relationship" with nuclear weapons. He imagines the worst scenario if we don't react. I really appreciate the evolution of the image: the movie begins with beautiful images of the nature and finishes with bad ones. The spectator are really shocked by that. The fact is even if we know the danger of some behavior and the nuclear weapons we let it spread.
We have known 2 World War since 100years we would destroy the earth with nuclear weapons but we don't learn of our mistakes. The nuclear weapons are still here and the earth and humans being are still in danger...

i didn't like this film because it is
cacicatural. It show only bad human behaviour with chocking images in order to we agree with the commentary. I dont know where they want lead us with this film. Even if man can be a monster he can do some extraordinary things too and this documentary isnt very objective. It show some horrible things without explain the reason of that.It want we feel guilty of human behaviour but it is in our nature, and we had to do some mistake to do better. For instance about nuclear. we could condamn it looking some place destucted bt nuclear explosion but it will be the main energy in the next century and we will need it. And if we disapear because of our behavior, because of a war or something else it could be a good thing fot earth and life. All could be begin again and peace and harmonia could be exist on earth

This film shows the end of human. It is very dramatic! In fact, people can love and in the same time, make nuclear weapons. We see beautiful pictures with mother and her child, or a couple... and then, there are pictures of people who are suffering because of serious injuries, the consequences of nuclear weapons.
There are pictures very hard, for example, we see died people or very bad injuries.
This film wants people to react. Men are dangerous, they want more and more power and can kill to get it.

I think it is very sad because we see the end of our world, and we are responsible of this tragedy. Futhermore, I believe it is possible. In fact, men don't respect the Earth, they are too selfish.

I like this film because we can see the difference between the north and the south . They don't underestimate the condition in which the south persons live and the pictures are good and hard.
We can't imagine how difficult the life of the south person is with the emission at TV because they censure several pictures.
The passage on the effect of nuclear bomb touch me a lot. That's right we all know that it killed so many people but what for the one's who survive? Their injuries and pain are inhuman. To the pain to had lost people they love, they also had physical injuries who are horrible.
It also explain how much the humans are responsible of the earth seek. With use of nuclear, pollution, etc... we can't continue to say it's the nature so we can't do anything for the improve of the natural phenomenom.
It's a good film. To put hard pictures is a good idea I think, we must realize what we are doing to each other. But to give more enjoying pictures would be great. We are not monsters after all...^^"
(sorry for the faults T_T)

It is a very interesting film.It deals really with the evil side in the human being and his tendency to behave with his instinct.Besides,it describes people suffering:Weapons of massive destruction, famine and features showing persecution are clearly highlighted.Ernest Hemingway said :"Man is not made for defeat". Man has reached a position that permit to him to defy nature and to try to find a relief to his challenge to the elements in which he lives, but he never forget his permanent tendency to kill his fellow men. So,truths are faithfully revealed in this film.there is no denying that a pale vision of nature and beauty is transcribed throughout the film. But,what i may criticize in that film is that many points are repeated which may be an annoying point for impatient public as we certainly have seen similar aspects. However,

This short film is interesting. We can see in few minutes the bad side of human beings. The examples are very significative, and some images are very shocking. So, this concentration of images which remind us bad days of history made me very sad because I saw that human being is not "good". And what is disturbing, is to see in the same time images of good moments of our daily life. So, we realize that we are seing this movie, but after the life will go on, whereas others people will sufer and die because of wars and irresponsability of some dirigeants, and also the bad use of science. I think this film is interesting and also worrying because it shows the gap between two categories of human beings, and the feeling that even if we know the situation, we are not preocupated by thoses crimes. And the question now is "what can we do ?".

This film was interesting, and try to analyse the human society, and principally human's mistakes like war and pollution. The most part of this picture was dealing with war and nuclear weapon. We can see some horrible images of the result of nuclear bomb in Hiroshima (if intersted about :"Black rain" is a book talking about the life of a family in Hiroshima during and after the bomb). And, except some moments treating about nature and love, this film is very negative about human and the external point of view reinforce it. But this study of humanity is only talking about this last century, and not about before, about colonisation, apartheid ...
And, even if dealing with wars, this picture don't explain the causes of this conflicts and seems to accuse the scientist working for industry and weapon factory. This is more a melancholic memory about humanity and war, than a complete analysis of the human situation in the end of the XIXth even if it's presenting like if a nuclear war destroyed the entire humanity. This picture seems to be a judgment of the humanity instead of being a "anthropologic" study. Except the part about love, this film don't show any human quality and I think it's not good point. After having seen Anthropoligy 101, we fell like discouraged and powerless against the bloody destiny of humanity instead that we can change all this conflicts, all the society governed by a very instable system, giving war and starvation...

Hello,

First I will say that this movie can't let without feeling.
I think it is very intresting. It's important for me to have a sight on the whole world sometime. This avoid us to fell in a nothing but european or american point of view. It tells us that we are not alone, I don't speak about UFO but about other countries, other civilisations.
Good things in this movie:

-First we see the dark side of world's inhabitants: greed, war, selfishness ans narrowmindedness.
It's chocking because we know most of things that had been showed and most of us do nothing to avoid them.
Yesterday, I went in Grenoble center town. Three times someone asked me if I would give for Care, an association created to help people. And tree times I refused. Today, after this film, I feel guilty and ashamed.

-The second part shows us how humans could be good sometimes and how love is next to us in our daily life. Love is powerfull and can change life.

The conclusion of this movie is that men are able to share love but even if we know the situation we think that we can do nothing to help the world.

Two things drove the world to destruction: -Nuclear war
-Pollution

Nuclear war is certainly next to what we saw before: people don't know themselves so, they don't mind to kill them each others.
But pollution is different, it is the run to economic increase. There is no real differences between Nuclear weapon run or economic run:
both are meaningless.

This movie is a great call to generosity and responsibility.

This movie is quite brutal in the way of delivering its message. But I think that it is what makes people interested in it. I liked it because the vision of the future that it shows seems to be clearly what is going to happen to the earth if human beings don't stop destroying it. I also liked the fact that it was presented like a post-apocalyptic documentary: it looks more real.
What I didn't like though, is that in this movie, the earth we know seems to be already doomed. Watching this movie almost made me believe that this disaster was actually going to happen, no matter what...
Anyway I found this film directed very well, and I liked it because it is a documentary that really is shocking...

Hello everybody,
This films is very upsetting... Indeed we can see what is the purpose of our humanity... ! For some people it's the peace (like Mr Joseph Rotblat and the Pugwash movement) and for others it's the conflict and the war... To Believe that we can not live together on this earth without fears and without terror !
This film show that weapons call weapons, it's the phenomenon of speculation...
If you have fears about an "enemy", you make weapons. Your "enemy" knows that you make weapons, consequently he will make weapons ! What is the end of this phenomenon ? Which persons have rights to be policemen of the world ? This film try to inform people about a real facts which happened around us... We must take aware of the dangerousness of this nuclear weapons. That happened in 1945 (Hiroshima and Nagasaki) but it isn't out of talk today... I think that lots of students must see this video. It's very interesting.
